Your bike tour in Denmark

Welcome to cycling country! This route takes you along the kingdom’s east coast, with its beautiful beaches and small marinas. It offers medium to long stages and plenty of sites to discover. Departing and returning to Copenhagen, you’ll have plenty of time to visit this vibrant and charming capital with its strong cycling culture. You can also visit the royal cities of Hillerød and Roskilde, with the added bonus of a trip to Sweden. Sea, sand, culture and history combine perfectly in this magnificent Nordic tour!

Day 1 : Arrival at Copenhagen

Arrival at Copenhagen and check into your downtown hotel. Free time to explore the city (stroll along the Nyhavn canal, Rosenborg Castle or Tivoli Gardens). You can purchase a CPH CARD for 24h, 48h or 72h for unlimited access to public transport and over 80 museums and attractions in the city.

Day 2 : Copenhagen – Snekkersten or Helsingør | 50 km

Hand over your bikes and head north to Helsingør. On the way, stop in front of the Little Mermaid! You’ll reach Hellerup and Klampenborg, where you’ll appreciate the designer houses on the seafront, not forgetting the famous Bellevue beach. Through the peaceful Dyrehaven wildlife park, also a royal hunting ground, you ride along a cycle path lined with ancient trees, with the chance of encountering curious deer and fallow deer. Enjoy a picnic stop or a snack at the famous Bakken amusement park! In Rungstedlund, visit the manor house* of one of Denmark’s best-known authors: Karen Blixen (“Out of Africa”), then in Humlebæk, stop off at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art**, also famous for its architecture and its location by the sea and opposite Sweden. Finally, you arrive in Snekkersten, a fishing village just 2km from Helsingør town center, where the imposing Kronborg Castle, overlooking the strait, inspired Shakespeare to write his tragedy Hamlet!

*closed Mondays except in July and August

Day 3 : Excursion to Sweden | 45 km + ferry

Today, you’ll have the chance to hop over to Sweden for the day, taking the ferry to Helsingborg (included), one of the oldest cities in the North. Don’t miss the Town Hall and the Kärnan Tower, the only remains of the medieval fortress. Then head for the Swedish coast and explore the small fishing ports, before returning through the forest to the ferry: a little loop in the fresh air!
If you prefer to stay in Denmark, you’ll have time to visit Kronborg Castle (if you haven’t already). The maritime museum in Helsingør is also worth a visit. Continuing northwards, enjoy the cosy squares and restaurants of the coast. This landscape of coastal villages, white sandy beaches and special light has inspired many painters and poets.

Day 4 : Snekkersten or Helsingør – Hillerød | 55 km

Today, you’ll set off along the coast towards Hornbæk, a small fishing village where time seems to have stood still. You’ll want to make a stop here for the atmosphere, and why not take a dip in the Baltic Sea? Then on to Hillerød via the Grib Skov forest and Lake Esrum. To visit the royal family’s summer residence, Fredensborg, you’ll need to extend your itinerary by around 10km. This 18th-century palace boasts a magnificent garden and a fairytale interior. Arrive in Hillerød, a charming little town with a picturesque town center, and home to one of the kingdom’s most beautiful castles: Frederiksborg. A former Danish Renaissance residence, it houses the portraits of all the kings and queens and boasts a magnificent chapel! Don’t forget to stroll through the surrounding park!

A longer alternative (75km) is to continue along the coast to Tisvildeleje, gateway to the Tisvildeleje Hegn National Park, a popular seaside resort.

Day 5 : Hillerød – Roskilde | 50 km

You leave the rural part of the island to reach the bay of Roskilde, a charming and pleasant former Viking city. Its cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit! Another must-see of the day is the town’s harbour, where you can visit the Viking Ship Museum, with its drakkars refloated in the bay itself, and its shipyard.

Day 6 : Roskilde – Copenhagen | 52 km

Return to the coast towards Copenhagen from the southwest, through picturesque villages and beaches south of the capital. The route takes you along the coast, away from traffic, to the center of Copenhagen. Along the way, you’ll pass through Arken, then the island of Amager, the “free city” of Christiana and numerous buildings with atypical architecture. When you reach the capital, you’ll need to reduce your speed and watch out for the many cyclists arriving from all sides. Return your bike to your hotel.

Some traffic is to be expected in Copenhagen, but the city is equipped with 350km of cycle paths (you’ll see more bikes than cars!). Although motorists are used to cyclists, special care is required.
