Your bike tour on La Vélodyssée, from La Rochelle to Biarritz (or Hendaye):

From the port of La Rochelle, taking the cycle paths of “La Vélodyssée”, you ride along the coast through the pine forests until you reach the Belle Epoque villas of Royan. Cross the estuary of Grave by boat and head south to discover the Bay of Arcachon.
Enjoy the lively resorts (Biscarrosse, Mimizan, Capbreton) and wild beaches, renowned for surfing then arrive in the Basque Country, with the prestigious Biarritz. The extension to Hendaye by the wild ledge offers magnificent views.

Day 1 : Arrival in La Rochelle + excursion on the Ile de Ré | 45 km

Take time to visit the historic center of La Rochelle, the old port and its lively streets with arcades.

In less than 20 minutes from the center of La Rochelle, cross the bridge and discover the magic of the Ile de Ré, a true paradise by bike. An incredible diversity of landscapes is offered to you with a loop which allows to discover Saint Martin de Ré, a maritime village with incomparable charm. On your way back, do not miss the Châteliers Abbey and La Prée Fort at La Flotte. Rivedoux-Plage invites more to idleness with its beach of white sand.

Day 2 : La Rochelle – Rochefort | 60 km

From the famous towers of La Rochelle harbour, ride along the cycling path by the ocean leading to Châtelaillon-Plage, a seaside city. Then you will reach the astonishing city of Rochefort, following the river banks of the Charente.

Day 3 : Rochefort – La Tremblade | 39 km

Then you will ride along a cycling path to the salt pan crossed by several small canals. Marennes is the first oyster farming pool in Europe: a perfect stopover to discover regional food!

Day 4 : La Tremblade – Royan | 30 km

Continue your journey between salt pans and the Seudre estuary. After Palmyre, “the Coast of Beauty” is a spectacular step thanks to an amazing cycling path with a sea view until Royan and its Belle Epoque villas.

Day 5 : Royan – Montalivet | 30 km

After Royan, go to the Pointe de Grave! You embark on the ferry to cross the mouth of the Gironde. Enjoy the bike paths in the shade of pine trees to reach Soulac sur Mer, a pleasant seaside resort and an ideal stopover. Its Romanesque basilica and its beautiful neo-colonial style villas are worth a stroll. The route continues between ocean and pine forest to Montalivet les Bains.

Day 6 : Montalivet – Lacanau Océan | 50 km

Continue on “La Vélodyssée” along the Atlantic. The easy route takes you through the dunes by beautiful forest trails. It’s hard to resist the call of bathing. Enjoy the pleasures of the ocean or lakes before joining Lacanau-Ocean, known worldwide for its surf spots. Before enjoying the sunset on the terrace or on the beach, you can discover beautiful villas that contribute to the charm of this lively resort.

Day 7 : Lacanau Océan – Arcachon | 45 km

Follow the Ocean until Arcachon. This stage is a subtle mix of pines and fines sands’ dunes. Leave your bikes, wherever you wish, to enjoy the beaches. Arriving at the Cap Ferret, take the ferry with your bikes, to reach Arcachon. The hotel will welcome you, not far from the beaches, to have fun in the Bay waves!

Day 8 : Arcachon – Biscarrosse | 30 km

Take advantage of this small stage to appreciate the discovery of a must: the Pilat Dune. You will be rewarded with the ascent: at the top, enjoy a panoramic view, impregnable on the Ocean and the Bay of Arcachon.

Day 9 : Biscarrosse – Mimizan Plage | 55 km

The course now distances itself from the ocean and “La Vélodyssée” makes you discover the interior of the Landes and its ponds. The more sinuous and more hilly route winds between the dunes and the big lakes (Biscarrosse, Parentis, Aureilhan) to arrive at the seaside resort of Mimizan-Plage, animated and charming with its Belle-Epoque villas.

Day 10 : Mimizan Plage – Vieux Boucau | 55 km

“La Vélodyssée” finds a peaceful route along the coast, in the heart of the pine forest. Contis les Bains is an ideal first stop. A small unusual detour for a superb point of view? the visit of the lighthouse of Contis with the ascent of its 183 steps. After Saint Girons Plage, the route slowly departs from the ocean by a cycle path that alternates between forest and small roads. Leon lake invites you to swim before returning to the coast and reach Vieux Boucau, original with its marine lake.

Day 11 : Vieux Boucau – Biarritz | 65 km

A great last stage in apotheosis with a beautiful bike path that leaves the Landes to get where the surf is king. You ride along the longest sandy beach in Europe to the famous resorts of Hossegorand Capbreton. Here, do not miss the inevitable walk on the Estacade, a wooden pier built by Napoleon III in the 19th century.

Day 12 : Departure during the day
