Your cycling in the Douro Valley:

Your biking holiday in the Douro will acquaint you with fascinating, magical natural surroundings, the best cuisine and some of the world’s finest wines including, of course, Port Wine for which the region is famous.
Throughout your journey, the River Douro will envelop you with its magic, whether you are enjoying a breath-taking view from on high, cycling alongside it, or even riding on a boat. The unique terraced vineyards, so typical of the region that is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Property, are a delight to the eye. Visit Pinhão, around which most of the famous Port wine estates are located, and Peso da Régua, the International Capital of Wine and Vineyards.

Day 1 : Arrival at Porto airport - Transfer to Miranda do Douro

Shared transfer at 2:00 pm from Porto Airport to the hotel in Miranda do Douro. On your way, enjoy the beautiful landscape and scenery that unfold along the way. The Douro River Canyon and its over 200-meter-high cliffs also offers a fascinating landscape. The small town of Miranda do Douro, with its typical whitewashed houses, its Roman origins and narrow cobbled streets, deserves an exploratory walk.

Day 2 : Miranda do Douro - Sendim | 47 km

The first stage of your biking holiday takes you through some of the eastern parts of the International Douro Nature Reserve. Wilderness and radiant landscapes are its most striking characteristics. The stretch you shall cycle along is a gentle one, across a highland plateau. This is a quiet land, populated by over 170 species of birds, wild boars. Study the skies to see an Egyptian vulture or a Bonelli’s eagle.

Picnic included

Day 3 : Sendim - Torre de Moncorvo | 38 km or 48 km

Transfer at 9:30 am from the accommodation to the starting point.

Today’s tour takes you along a former railway line. The eco trail runs past forests, across fields, a typical agricultural landscape, and a few scattered woods. Although the shepherds you meet may not speak your language, they are extremely friendly and happy to pose for photos. Continue along olive and almond groves until you reach medieval Torre de Moncorvo, the Capital of the Almond Blossom Festival. You will be warmly greeted by your host at an elegant town house where you may have the chance to sample her homemade liqueurs, which go beautifully with the locally grown Moncorvo almonds.

Picnic included

Day 4 : Torre de Moncorvo - Vila Flor | 29 km or 38 km

Cycle alongside the River Douro. Prepare yourself for stunning views and a magical landscape! The descent down to the river takes you through olive groves that produce some of the best olive oil in the world. That night, you stay in a farming estate, producing traditional and organic olive oil.

Picnic included for lunch and included dinner at the accommodation.

Day 5 : Vila Flôr - Sabrosa | 29 km or 31 km

Transfer at 9:30 am from the accommodation to the starting point.

The Alto Douro Winemaking Region is famous for its wines. First and foremost is Porto Wine, but the region also produces prize-winning red wines from the Touriga grape. The terraced vineyards, so typical of the region that is listed as a Unesco World Heritage Property, were carved by men from the hillsides. When you arrive at the river’s edge, load your bike on a Rabelo boat and enjoy the trip to Pinhão, the next stop, around which most of the famous Port wine estates are located.
Transfer by boat at 11.45 am from Cais da Foz do Tua to Pinhao.
Don’t forget to visit the beautifully tiled train station. The seventeenth-century house where you will spend the night is located on the hillside above the town and has magnificent views.

Transfer at 3:00 pm from Pinhao railway station to your accomodation in Sabrosa.

Day 6 : Sabrosa - Peso da Régua | 31 km

First, the biking route will take you through the back roads of the Douro, then you will cycle gently back to the riverside. At the end of this beautiful day, you will arrive in Peso da Régua, the International Capital of Wine and Vineyards, at the centre of the Port wine-growing region. Here, the owner of one of the quintas will welcome you with a fine wine on the terrace.

Day 7 : Transfer from Peso da Régua to Porto

Transfer at 10 am from the hotel in Régua to Porto Airport. The transfer can be to other location within Porto, instead of the airport.

" Pleasant cycling "

5 days of pleasant cycling in the east to central sections of the Duoro Region. Great descents to the Douro River through magnificent scenery on a few of the days. Rabelo ride on the Duoro River was a highlight. Accommodations and food were good to excellent.

" We really like the Rando Velo tours! "

The Douro valley is spectacular and we were so happy to be there on our bikes! I feel like i can remember every turn, every view, every hill [downhill and uphill!] The scenery is simply breathtaking and unforgettable. The wines we tasted [and brought home] are world class. We were the only cyclists on the road [not many cars either] It seems that the Douro valley is a well kept secret and so is the quality and diversity of the wines from this region. All in all one of the best trips that we have done with rando Velo [trip 3 and counting]!
