Your cycle trip on the Tour de Gironde
Leave Bordeaux, the wine capital of the world, to reach the Atlantic and the Arcachon Bay! here is the program for the Gironde cycle tour. Through the Entre-deux-Mers vineyard then on the bike paths in the forest of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park, you will discover villages of character such as the medieval city of La Réole or Bazas, you will appreciate the places of swimming in the lakes or in the ocean, you can climb the Dune du Pilat for a magnificent panorama. Take advantage of this Tour de Gironde by bike to share moments with family or friends.
Day 1 : Arrival in Bordeaux
At your arrival, take your time to visit Bordeaux, World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Take a walk along the Garonne docks, meander in the lively streets of St Pierre quarter, bargain-hunt in the Chartrons quarters, have fun on the reflecting water’s mirror of water …
Day 2 : Bordeaux – Sauveterre de Guyenne | 55 km
Once the Garonne crossed in Bordeaux, follow the bike path ‘Roger Lapébie’ (French racing cyclist) in the middle of vineyards and forest. This path uses an ancient railway which leads you to the heart of the ‘Entre-deux-mers’. You cross the old fortified bastide of Créon with its arcaded square. Do not miss the small detour in La Sauve for the Abbey of Sauve-Majeur and the Church of Saint Pierre, listed as World Heritage by Unesco. You arrive at Sauveterre de Guyenne, another old bastide where you spend the night.
Day 3 : Sauveterre de Guyenne – Bazas | 54 km
You continue your journey through Entre-Deux-Mers area in the heart of the Bordeaux Wine Route to reach the Garonne. By small hilly roads, you reach the City of Art and History of La Réole and the viewpoint from the old Benedictine abbey overlooking the river. Towpath along the Canal de Garonne then small hilly roads allow you to quietly reach the medieval city of Bazas with its rich architectural heritage.
Day 4 : Bazas – Salles | 63 km
You leave Bazas by the bike path towards the west coast and the ocean. The Church of Notre-Dame d’Uzeste and the Castle of Villandraut deserve to leave the track (only a few hundred meters). The Sauternes vineyard is very close. Then the route becomes quieter on a beautiful cycle path, alternating between the lakes of Hostens (beautiful swimming spot) and the largest pine forest in Europe in the heart of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Natural Park.
Day 5 : Salles – Arcachon | 49 km
The ocean approaches, the landscapes change, the track flattens out and the pine forests gradually disappear as you approach the Arcachon Bay. In Biganos, the route leaves the Tour de Gironde via a beautiful bike path joining the Dune du Pilat, the highest dune in Europe. The summit offers an incredible view. After this remarkable stop, you follow the track towards the Arcachon Basin. Your hotel welcomes you not far from the beaches allowing you to enjoy the waves of the Bay!
Day 6 : Excursion to Cap Ferret | 32 km
Cross the Bay to go on a Cap Ferret exploration. Follow the great ocean beaches, in the shades of the pines, on the bike paths. Then, reach the inside of the bay and cross the oyster villages. Take your time to discover the oyster culture, chatting with an oyster farmer, and some tasting. Before leaving, climb up the lighthouse: walk up the 258 steps for a 360° vantage point!
Departure at the end of the excursion.
Possibility to plan an extra night in Arcachon.

The meeting place is on the Arcachon Thiers pier: A boat is taking you to the heart of the bay. This island welcomes a lot of bird species. You will discover the ‘Cabanes tchanquées’, emblematic shadows of the bay. You will follow the oysters’ villages of the Cap Ferret. The boat will lead you through 100 hectares of oysters’ parks. You will go back to Arcachon via the seafront and its villas.
