Your cycling tour on the Paris - Mont St Michel route:
The bike tour ‘Paris – Mont-St-Michel’ is opened now, the ‘Wonder of the West’ standing right in front of you! From Rambouillet, follow the peaceful ‘Voies Vertes’ cycling paths of Normandy and Perche area and ride through the impressive natural parks from typical tiny villages to medieval manor houses. At the end, you deserve to enjoy the wonderful Mont St Michel!
Day 1 : Arrival in Rambouillet
Surrounded by its well known former royal hunting forest, Rambouillet is a real breath of fresh air close to Paris. Take time to visit the historical town center and its elegant château where French lords, emperors and presidents used to go.
Day 2 : Rambouillet – Chartres | 50 km
For this 1st stage, ride to Epernon and Maintenon to have a look at the sumptuous château of the housekeeper who had become the secret wife of king Louis XIV. Then continue to the nice town of Chartres and its old neighbourhoods. Do not miss admiring the stained glass windows of the amazing gothic cathedral which was listed in 1979 as Unesco World heritage.
Day 3 : Chartres – Illiers-Combray | 32 km
Ride along the peaceful roads of the wheat belt to reach the tiny town of Illiers-Combray, where the French poet Marcel Proust lived. Illiers-Combray has not changed so much and has known how to preserve the charm of the past.
Day 4 : Illiers-Combray – Nogent-le-Rotrou | 43 km
Let’s cycle to the Perche area, a land of woods, meadows and agriculture. You will discover lots of charming chateaux and manor houses (like the beautiful chateau de Frazé), picturesque villages and churches before reaching Nogent le Rotrou, overlooked by its medieval chateau.
Day 5 : Nogent-le-Rotrou – Bellême | 38 km or 42 km
Reach the ‘Basse Normandie’ area, a green and hilly land which offers a beautiful cultural heritage among exceptional landscapes. Along the hills, you will ride from old manor-houses to tiny wash-houses to Bellême, a very charming medieval village.
Possibility to use the brand new ‘voie verte’ cycling path from Condé sur Huisne.
Day 6 : Bellême – Alençon | 52 km
Go through the Natural Park of ‘Perche’, from the Huisne valley and the Sarthe valley, via the nice village of La Perrière, before reaching the ‘voie verte’ cycling path in Le Mêle sur Sarthe. Then follow the cycling path peacefully to get to Alençon that shelters the impressive Notre Dame basilica.
Day 7 : Alençon – Bagnoles-de-l'Orne | 51 km
Cycle through the Natural Park of Normandy to reach the wonderful Chateau de Carrouges ! This chateau built with red bricks and granite is worth a visit and acts as a summary of seven centuries of history. Continue towards Bagnoles de l’Orne, a famous spa resort, which will reveal its authentic French ‘Belle Epoque’ way of life.
Day 8 : Bagnoles-de-l'Orne – Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët | 62 km
Continue your journey following the ‘voie verte’ cycling path via Mortain, a land of legends and history. Then ride through the apple and pear country, in the heart of the Norman farmlands, up to St Hilaire du Harcouët, a small city settled between the Sélune river and the Airon river.
Day 9 : Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët – Pontorson (Mont-Saint-Michel) | 56 km
A last ride on the peaceful ‘Voie Verte’, towards the Mont St Michel right in front of you! Enjoy this splendid and unforgettable view over the bay, with the salt marshes in the foreground and the ‘Marvel of the West’ which slowly appears in the background.
