Your cycling tour from Bayeux to Saint-Malo:
Discover Normandy and Britany during the week; enjoy the Normandy wooded countryside, the farms and the charming villages; the Mont Saint Michel, one of the Wonder of the World, rising to the sky; the beauty of the Britany granitic coast and the emerald sea along the road to Saint Malo, impregnable Corsair City.
The bike is the ideal mean of transport to enjoy each point of view, to take your time to discover the Normandy and Brittany lands at your own pace and far from the busy and loud roads, to breathe the good country and sea air.
Day 1 : Arrival in Bayeux + bike excursion to the Landing Beaches | 50 km
Bayeux is the ideal starting point for the crossing of Normandy by bike. Enjoy the first day to walk around in the pedestrian area, between the manor houses and the timber frame houses. Take time to admire the amazing 11th century Bayeux Tapestry showing the conquest of England by William Duke of Normandy.
Then, ride to the landing beaches such as Omaha beach, with the possibility to continue to the ‘Pointe du Hoc’. Proceed to Colleville-sur-mer where lies the moving American Military cemetary before riding small countryside routes through typical small villages before reaching Bayeux.
Day 2 : Bayeux – Villers Bocage | 40 km
Leave the city, and go to the discovery of the Normandy bocage, typical countryside landscape of this part of Normandy. You will cross charming villages, great houses and farms, ancient abbeys. The little town of Villers-Bocage will welcome you for the night.
Day 3 : Villers Bocage – Vire | 46 km
Follow your path in the heart of this nice countryside; from small villages to green pastures before reaching the Souleuvre river. Here you will meet the imposing Viaduct dating from 1887. You will arrive in Vire at the end of the day, where remain the scars of History, from the Middle Ages to the Second World War.
Day 4 : Vire – St Hilaire du Harcouët | 55 km
This is, again, a pleasant stage we suggest: local built heritage, picturesque villages and little towns. Quietness and tranquility will be the keyword of the day. Make a stop in Mortain nest by the side of a cliff, offering nice views over the cascade waterfalls and the valley. Continue to St Hilaire du Harcouët.
Day 5 : St Hilaire du Harcouët – Pontorson (Mont St Michel) | 57 km
This day leads you to the Mont Saint Michel Bay. You will leave the Normandy bocage landscapes for the plains. You will ride along the bay and the salt meadows to reach Pontorson, Normandy little town with dark stones. Enjoy this splendid and unforgettable view over the bay, with the salt marshes on the foreground and the ‘Occident Marvel’ which slowly appears on the background.
Day 6 : Pontorson (Mont St Michel) – Le Vivier sur Mer | 33 km
This day, the stage is short. Use it to go to the Mont Saint Michel. In two shakes of a lamb’s tail, you will reach the Mont. Leave your bike at the bottom of the rampart and climb to the summit. The view is breathtaking. Walk around the narrow streets, take the time to visit the abbey and to understand this extraordinary place. Then, ride along the salt meadows to Le-Vivier-sur-Mer where you will spend the night.
Day 7 : Le Vivier sur Mer – Saint-Malo | 40 km
Keep going along the salty meadows for some kilometers and then, there will be a change of landscape: the Britany granitic coasts will appear. Take a break in the nice town of Cancale before continuing via the Pointe du Grouin and the sheltered countryside roads, to the Corsair city: St Malo
