Your cycling tour from Saumur to Chinon:

Ride in the Loire castle region and discover the bike roads out of the beaten tracks: little and unknown castles, vineyards, Loire river banks, troglodytes, and typical villages and houses.

You will appreciate the quietness along the rivers, the easy rhythm of the itineraries, the country paths and the shadow of the forests. You will have the choice to visit big and famous castles like Saumur, Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry; and smallest ones like Saché, Montreuil-Bellay and Rivau. You do not have to visit all of them! If the time is missing, it is still a good experience to see the castles in the middle of their park, up on the hills, or reflecting on the water.

Day 1 : Arrival in Saumur

Saumur welcomes you for your bike tour between Anjou and Touraine. Walk around Saumur’s streets, to the place Saint Pierre where you should stop to drink a glass of sparkling wine and then climb to the castle from where you will have a stunning view on the city of Saumur and the Loire river.

Day 2 : Saumur – Fontevraud | 45 km

Leave Saumur and the Loire river banks and ride through the countryside and famous ‘Saumur-champigny’ vineyards. You should stop at the amazing château de Brézé, in which you can visit as much on the ground as underground! Reach the Fontevraud Abbey via nice paths and shady roads. You will be astonished by the European biggest monastic city combining French History and modern Art.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of Brézé (Included in the "Châteaux Package")

chat. Brézé

Free visit of this chateau… and its incredible trogloditic basement! With its 18m deep dry moats, and impressive network of galleries, it is the largest underground fortress in Europe. An amazing place to visit.

Day 3 : Excursion to Brézé and Montreuil Bellay | 45 km

Ride through the vineyards surrounding Fontevraud and follow the sign-posted route for cyclist along the river le Thouet to Montreuil-Bellay. You will be charmed by the exceptional heritage of this wonderful medieval city, away from major tourist routes. Take the time to visit the castle to discover its History and the story of the families who built, developed, lived in and protected it until today. Taste the domain wines at the counter of the castle shop. Go back to Fontevraud through the countryside quiet roads of Anjou.

OptionVisit of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
Fontevraud

Sylvain Brajeul

Free visit of this imposing and vast abbey, founded in 1099. It houses the recumbent tomb effigies of the Plantagenet dynasty, including Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart! This masterpiece of Romanesque art has other discoveries in store, such as the cloisters and gardens, or the chapter house.

Day 4 : Fontevraud – Chinon | 48 km

This stage leads you the Chinon, little medieval city, overhanged by its royal fortress. Follow the roads in the heart of the Chinon vineyards, then experience a charming brand new bike path passing via typical villages and houses in tuffeau stone. You should not miss a visit of the château du Rivau and its garden: a great walk in a peaceful and enchanting settings.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of Rivau (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
chateau du Rivau

RandoVélo

Visit on your own of this Loire Valley chateau which is unjustly little known. This is a very nostalgic 15th century chateau, which looks like a fortress, with a keep and functioning drawbridge. It is surrounded by a veritable fairy tale garden, made up of, among others, 500 varieties of fragrant roses.

Day 5 : Chinon – Azay le Rideau | 41 km

Ride in the heart of the most prestigious parcels of the Chinon vineyards before reaching one of the most beautiful French village: Crissay-sur-Manse. Continue through the sweet Touraine countryside, via the capital city of basketry: Villaines-les-Rochers, and reach Azay-le-Rideau, charming village and impressive Renaissance Castle, which carved walls reflect on the surrounding water.

Day 6 : Excursion to Villandry | 38 km

Leave Azay-le-Rideau riding along the river Indre; a tiny detour makes you visit the small castle of Saché, where the French author Honoré de Balzac came to seek for inspiration for his novels. Keep going in the heart of the Touraine’s countryside to Villandry. You should not miss the visit of its exceptional gardens: French-style gardens, English-style gardens, labyrinth, shady parks… These will enthrall children and adults, garden lovers and passionate. Reach Azay-le-Rideau along the Loire river banks with the possibility of a tiny detour to visit the medieval castle of Langeais.

OptionVisit of the Gardens of Villandry (Included in the "Châteaux Package")

chat. Villandry

Visit on your own of the famous « French style » Renaissance gardens. The richness of the gardens at Villandry comes from their diversity, which is unique in Europe: a perfect harmony between the immense, decorative kitchen garden, and an ornamental garden based on the theme of ‘love’, water and music gardens, etc.

Day 7 : Azay le Rideau – Saumur | 57 km

Following the river Indre, reach the splendid tiny château of Islette, still inhabited by its owners, before joining the Loire river and the village of Candes-Saint-Martin; stop for a while, and feel the quietness of this place, walking in the flowered streets. Keep going riding to Montsoreau and its castle on the Loire banks. The troglodyte’s villages and the vines on the hills lead you to Saumur.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of l’Islette (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
Chateau de l'Islette

V-Treney CRT Centre-Val-de-Loire

Visit on your own of this chateau, which is one of our favourites! Nestling on the banks of the river Indre, this romantic Renaissance chateau, which is still inhabited, is considered as the lesser known brother of the chateau of Azay-le-Rideau. At one time it sheltered the tempestuous love affair between the two great sculptors Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, and still holds evidence of their presence.
