Your cycling tour in the Loire Valley:

Enjoy the western Loire Valley sweetness and Touraine Treasures !
From Saumur, you will cycle through the prestigious vineyards of Saumur Champigny and Chinon, still surrounded by hundred-year-old stone walls.
Following the « Loire à vélo » cycling paths, you will ride along imposing chateaux proudly overlooking the Loire river and its wild landscapes. Then, Romanesque Abbeys and picturesque green gardens ‘à la Française’ will guide you all through your journey.

Day 1 : Arrival in Saumur

Discover the pleasant town of Saumur overlooked by its 14th century château and famous for its National Riding School and its sparkling white wine.

Day 2 : Saumur – Fontevraud | 45 km

This first stage guide you through the « Saumur Champigny » vineyards producing very elegant red wines. Make a stop at château de Brézé, well known for its impressive underground cellars ! Then, ride to Fontevraud and its royal abbey : an outstanding example of Romanesque art founded in 1099, considered as Europe’s most important monastic complex.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of Brézé (Included in the "Châteaux Package")

chat. Brézé

Free visit of this chateau… and its incredible trogloditic basement! With its 18m deep dry moats, and impressive network of galleries, it is the largest underground fortress in Europe. An amazing place to visit.

Day 3 : Fontevraud – Chinon | 48 km

After cycling through the Fontevraud forest, discover the famous Chinon vineyards producing the red wine highly appreciated by Rabelais ! After a stop at the château du Rivau which evokes the wonderful middle-Age stories and legends, reach the mediaeval town of Chinon, built on the Vienne river banks.

OptionVisit of the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
Fontevraud

Sylvain Brajeul

Free visit of this imposing and vast abbey, founded in 1099. It houses the recumbent tomb effigies of the Plantagenet dynasty, including Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard the Lionheart! This masterpiece of Romanesque art has other discoveries in store, such as the cloisters and gardens, or the chapter house.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of Rivau (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
chateau du Rivau

RandoVélo

Visit on your own of this Loire Valley chateau which is unjustly little known. This is a very nostalgic 15th century chateau, which looks like a fortress, with a keep and functioning drawbridge. It is surrounded by a veritable fairy tale garden, made up of, among others, 500 varieties of fragrant roses.

Day 4 : Chinon – Azay le Rideau | 41 km

This itinerary via troglodyte wine cellars and vineyards leads you to the village of Crissay sur Manse, listed among France’s most beautiful villages. Continue along the countryside roads to Azay le Rideau and its romantic Renaissance château, elegantly enclosed in its water and greenery setting.

Day 5 : Azay le Rideau – Saumur | 57 km

Join the “Loire à Vélo” routes which lead you to the village of Candes-Saint-Martin where you can visit the magnificent 12th and 13th century collegiate church. Then continue to the beautiful village of Montsoreau dominated by its château, built over the Loire river. Continue along troglodyte sites before reaching Saumur and your charming hotel situated in the town centre.

OptionVisit of the Chateau of l’Islette (Included in the "Châteaux Package")
Chateau de l'Islette

V-Treney CRT Centre-Val-de-Loire

Visit on your own of this chateau, which is one of our favourites! Nestling on the banks of the river Indre, this romantic Renaissance chateau, which is still inhabited, is considered as the lesser known brother of the chateau of Azay-le-Rideau. At one time it sheltered the tempestuous love affair between the two great sculptors Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin, and still holds evidence of their presence.

Day 6 : Departure during the day

" Nous renouvellerons cette expérience c'est sûr "

J’ai adoré ce style de voyage qui allie le sport et la découverte des châteaux et autres monuments. Ce qui est très appréciable également, c’est de pouvoir arriver le soir à l’hôtel l’esprit tranquille avec les bagages qui ont suivis notre parcours. Les hôtels sont bien choisis et les 2 repas dans la prestations étaient tout simplement délicieux. Nous renouvellerons cette expérience c’est sûr.
