Your bike tour in Holland

This trip is the perfect combination of relaxation and discovery.
You’ll spend a memorable week seeing the best of Holland: dunes and beaches, historic city centers, soothing countryside, traditional clogs and windmills.
You’ll stay in cosy inns that the whole family will love!

Tour highlights

  • Spend a night in a castle
  • Enjoy the beautiful city of Amsterdam
  • Explore the dunes and immense sandy beaches
  • Admire the famous windmills

Day 1Arrival at Haarlem

The family-run hostel is located in a quiet area in the north of the city, close to a small park called Schoterbos, filled with flowers, beehives and community vegetable gardens.
Head down to the city center to visit the historic heart of Haarlem. The Museum of Archaeology (free admission) and the wonderful Teijlers Science Museum will delight your children.
You can also visit the enormous De Adriaan windmill overlooking the river and the city.

Day 2Tour around Haarlem |30 km

Today, enjoy a little more of the beautiful city of Haarlem before heading for the coast, to the seaside resort of Zandvoort. This part of Holland lies below sea level. So what stops the sea from flooding the land? Along most of the coastline, it’s the dunes! Wide, undulating sand dunes, covered with grass to keep the sand from blowing away. Take advantage of the immense beaches to hunt for pretty shells, tiny crabs and hermit crabs, jump into the waves or build sand castles.

Day 3Haarlem - Heemskerk | 31 km

Today, in the town of IJmuiden, you’ll discover one of the world’s longest lock complexes, linking the North Sea to the North Sea Canal. Cruise ships, cargo ships, pleasure yachts and other vessels head for Amsterdam harbor through the locks, and it’s at this point that you can observe them up close…
A shorter cycle route (19 km) is also available today.
Tonight, you spend the night in a magnificent 13th-century castle. Assumburg Castle, in the village of Heemskerk, plunges you into a fairytale atmosphere! Surrounded by a moat and gardens, your son will feel like a knight and your daughter like a princess…
Important! Rooms are located in two buildings, the château and the orangery. Rooms are allocated according to availability.

Day 4Tour around Heemskerk | 33 km

Enjoy another beautiful day on the coast and relax by the sea. At the end of the day, you return to the château for a second night.

Day 5Heemskerk - Amsterdam | 45 km

Today, you’ll be exploring the beautiful Zaan region, named after the river of the same name. The region is famous for its traditional architecture: green-painted wooden houses, sheds, warehouses and windmills.
Stop off at Zaanse Schans to discover how cheese and wooden clogs are made, or climb into a windmill that creaks and shakes at the slightest gust of wind. On the way to Amsterdam, you’ll pass through Het Twiske park, where you can enjoy a wide range of activities with your children.

Day 6Free day in Amsterdam

Take to the streets of Amsterdam on foot or by bike today! Its neighborhoods offer an exceptional variety of urban architecture, beautiful parks, museums and cultural activities. Visit the Van Gogh Museum, take a boat trip on the canals, discover a relic of an 18th-century ship belonging to the Dutch East India Company, or visit the De Hortus botanical garden, with its magical exotic greenhouse where hundreds of butterflies flutter, before enjoying a hot chocolate in one of the friendly little cafés in the city center.

Day 7Amsterdam - Haarlem | 27 km

Leave the city behind and plunge into peaceful countryside. You’ll pass through the picturesque village of Spaarndam, built around a dam, before reaching the Kolksluis lock, considered Europe’s oldest lock (1280). You then return to your hostel in Haarlem for your final evening.
