Cycling tour from Provence to the Luberon
6 days / 5 days riding / ref. PR5 / Difficulty Sustained / Round tripper person
Your bike bike in Provence:
Provence … the land of light and intense colours that has attracted so many famous painters: Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne. Further east, the Luberon offers a magnificent route that will allow you to discover all the resources of an exceptional region: the beauty of its ever-changing landscapes, the richness of its cultural heritage, the atmosphere of its traditional markets and the art of living in a land of scents, colours and flavours.
This cycle tour will take you right to the heart of this paradise, to discover Avignon and its Popes’ Palace, Les Baux, a small medieval town perched on the top of an Alpilles hill, the ochre of Roussillon, the canals of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the lavender fields and many other wonders.
Tour highlights
- The medieval city of Avignon and the Popes' Palace
- The listed villages of Saint-Rémy, les Baux de Provence, Gordes and Ménerbes
- The timeless charm of small villages bordered by lavender
- Isle sur Sorgues, the Venice of Provence
Day 1Arrival in Avignon
Arrive early to have time to visit Avignon and especially the famous Palais des Papes! With its imposing ramparts and cobbled streets, Avignon instantly transports you back in time. Theatres, museums and art galleries sit alongside trendy bars and modern restaurants, giving Avignon a unique blend of ancient and modern.
Day 2Avignon – Saint-Rémy-de-Provence | 54 km
After a last look at the city of the Popes, take the ViaRhôna. The route zigzags along small roads between vineyards and orchards to Beaucaire, a town of art and history at the crossroads of Languedoc and Provence, then to Tarascon and its fortress, guardian of the banks of the Rhone, before arriving in St-Rémy-de-Provence, which inspired Van Gogh with its light, sunflowers and famous cypress trees.
Day 3Saint-Rémy-de-Provence – Cavaillon (via les Baux de Provence) | 45 km
Leave Saint-Rémy and cycle into the heart of the Alpilles, the land of Alphonse Daudet, with its sublime landscapes, a mixture of limestone rocks, garrigue and pine forests. It takes a little effort to reach the village of Les Baux de Provence, also classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, which overlooks exceptional landscapes. The route then winds its way through the massif before reaching Cavaillon on pleasant little country roads with beautiful views of the Alpilles.
Day 4Cavaillon – Roussillon | 43 km (via the villages) or 36 km (via Véloroute)
A series of villages (Ménerbes, Lacoste, Bonnieux, etc.), sublimely situated at the foot of the Petit Luberon, will mark your stage. The journey through these villages, where time seems to have stopped, will remain in your memory as a symbol of the Luberon. Facing the Luberon, the village of Roussillon is also classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. After an unmissable walk to the Roches Ocres, wander through the narrow streets of the village with its colourful facades, from yellow to purple, through all shades of pink and red.
You can also take a lovely cycle route for a smooth arrival in Roussillon.
Day 5Roussillon – Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or Isle sur la Sorgue | 26 km or 36 km (option Senanque abbey + 12 km)
Spend the day exploring the charming Luberon valley! You will discover the village of Gordes with its beautiful dry-stone houses, the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Sénanque surrounded by lavender fields (for the brave ones!) and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue gushes out, a geological curiosity.
Day 6Fontaine-de-Vaucluse or Isle sur la Sorgue – Avignon | 33 km or 22 km
Take time to enjoy Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the Venice of Provence, crossed by several canals through its narrow and ancient streets. Then your stage crosses the plains of the Sorgue, where orchards and cultivated fields provide an abundance of sun-drenched fruit and vegetables. Return to Avignon at the end of your beautiful tour.
Departure at the end of the stage.
Possibility to plan an extra night in Avignon.
