The 3 lakes region for families
6 days / 6 days riding / ref. SUIF / Difficulty Easy / Linear tripper person
Your bike route
The Mittelland route seems to have been designed with families in mind. Bicycle paths, most of them closed to traffic, lead along the Aare to the region’s famous three lakes. You’ll pass beautiful old towns, see colonies of storks and take time to cool off in the waters of lakes Biel, Murten and Neuchâtel. The pretty lakeside towns invite you to take time out for an ice cream. An entertaining and varied week for active families.
Tour highlights
- A circuit designed for families: easy, safe and beautiful
- The beauty of Swiss nature
- Swimming breaks
Day 1Soleure – Meienried | 25km
Luggage pick-up in Solothurn. The route follows the river past the Altreu stork colonies. Today’s destination is the charming farmhouse of the Käser family, where you’ll spend the night on straw (B&B upgrade available on request). In the immediate vicinity, a branch of the ancient Aare flows by, and a bird-watching tower stands in its place.
Day 2 Meienried – Bienne/Nidau | 10-15 km
You reach the point where the Aare is diverted into the Nidau-Buren canal, dotted with power stations and dams. The route follows the river’s pleasant course to Lake Biel, where you set up camp for the night at the port of Nidau. In the evening, you can walk to Biel’s city center.
Day 3Bienne/Nidau - Ins | 30-35 km
Market gardening characterizes the Seeland landscape. Since the course of the River Aare was altered, the region has been considered the breadbasket of the country. You follow the Mittelland route along the shores of Lake Biel, passing through small villages whose beaches and restaurants offer superb opportunities for a break.
Day 4Ins - Morat/Avenches | 13-26 km
Today, the choice is yours: you can drive straight to Murten, or take on the challenge of the route via Mont Vully, offering superb panoramic views. Your destination is the small town of Murten, whose well-preserved ramparts offer a perfect place for a stroll around the village.
Day 5Morat/Avenches - Estavayer-le-lac / Autavaux | 25-30 km
Today, you’re skirting the reedy shores of Lake de Neuchâtel. From time to time, you pass small fishing villages such as Chevroux or Portalban. The highlight of the stage is the lakeside village of Gletterens, with its reconstructed pile dwellings that take you back to prehistoric times. Finally, you reach the medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac.
Day 6Estavayer-le-lac / Autavaux| - Yverdon-les-Bains | 20-25 km
With the red roofs of Estavayer behind you, you’re off to enjoy the sandy beaches of Yvonand. The Centre Pro Natura in Champ-Pittet offers an educational stop-off before you reach your destination, the Bains d’Yverdon. After collecting your luggage, it’s time to leave.
Departure at the end of the stage.
Possibility of adding an extra night.
